History of International Women’s Day: March 8

Women’s Day: In today’s society, few female idols are reaching a high level where they can meet their financial needs and build continuous livelihood opportunities by themselves with self-respect and self-power. They are telling the world what the power of women is. They are constantly proving that women are not inferior in any field. They are proving themselves in education, medicine, business, politics, sports, banking, space, and technology. Apart from that, women are excelling in many fields while also taking care of household responsibilities.

These days, all compete equally with men in all fields. Proving that they are not limited to home only, we can achieve anything if we reach out. The governments of the respective countries have also brought some special laws for women.

How did this Women’s Day start?

International Women’s Day originated from the labor movement. It is recognized by the Ikyarajya Samiti and conducted annually. The seeds of its birth were planted in 1908. 15 thousand women demonstrated in Newark City for shorter working hours, better pay, and the right to vote. Keeping in mind the demands of these women, the idea of the Socialist Party of America, organized this day on an international scale in the year 1909, was a woman named Clara Zetkina. Clara Zetkin’s proposal was unanimously accepted by 100 women who attended the “International Conference of Working Women” held in Copenhagen in 1910.

International Women’s Day was first celebrated in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Centenary celebrations of International Women’s Day were also held in 2011. But in the year 1975, International Women’s Day was officially organized by Ikya Rajya Samiti. Ikyarajya Samiti statistics show that only half of working-age women contribute to the global labor force. International Women’s Day has become a day to celebrate the extent to which women have grown socially, politically, and economically. The reason behind this day is to organize sit-ins and protests to raise awareness about the ongoing humiliation.

Why should March 8 be celebrated?

During the war in 1917, Russian women went on strike, demanding food and peace. Four days later, the then-Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II, had to claim the throne. The provisional government then granted women the right to vote. The day of the women’s strike was, according to the Julian calendar, Sunday, February 23 (according to this calendar in Russia at the time.) According to the Gregorian calendar, it was March 8. That’s why March 8th (Gregorian calendar in use in most countries around the world) is celebrating International Women’s Day.
