History
Download ImageNew Year represents the end of one year and the start of another. The beginning of this new year is celebrated all over the world on the first day of January. Let us investigate the history of this calendar and the New Year festivities, including who was behind its creation.
The calendar we use today is called the Gregorian calendar. Pope Gregory XIII made changes to this calendar in 1582. Under this system, we account for about 24.6 extra seconds each year. This adds up to one additional day every 3513 years. The famous astronomer John Varson suggested a way to fix this error by keeping the year 400 AD as a leap year.
The International Union of Nations formed a committee to correct the errors in the calendar. This group reviewed several proposals and shared their conclusions in 1926. Still, the specifics have not been settled. There are many other smaller issues, similar to this one. In the past, people all over the world celebrated the New Year during Ugadi. According to the Book of Ezra in the Bible, the year’s first month begins in either March or April.
Historical records indicate that in France up until 1582 AD and in England until 1752 AD, March 25 was the New Year’s Day. The exact moment when this changed is unclear, but it eventually moved to April. There was much discussion about whether this festival should remain in March or be moved to April.
They eventually decided that it was better for the new festival to always occur on the same date every year. In the late 15th century, French Emperor Charles, who had been following the 11th month, established January 1 as the new first day of the year. This event marked the start of the New Year as we know it today. This decision did not have any scientific or natural reasoning. Initially, countries such as France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain accepted this change.
Germany adopted this calendar in 1699 AD, England in 1752 AD, Japan in 1873 AD, China in 1912 AD, Bulgaria in 1916 AD, and Russia in 1918 AD. During the 17th and 18th centuries, it was put into use across many areas under their control. Meanwhile, the Indian calendar was created by ancient scholars, with research carried out by notable figures like Aryabhata and Bhaskara. After thousands of years, they used advanced techniques to calculate the position of the planet on this specific day.
Regarding nature, Ugadi represents the first day of the spring festival during Chaitra. In different regions, the entry of the sun into Aries during spring is marked by Ugadi celebrations. These customs differ from the Ugadi recognized globally, which follows the New Year established by the French, lacking any additional festivities.
However, for the Telugu community, Ugadi is considered their New Year. In modern times, Telugu people, like many others, mostly partake in the same New Year traditions that are celebrated worldwide.
