Independence Day: The desire for freedom is universal. It can be personal or national. Every person wishes to live life freely for themselves. Without freedom, an individual ends up living as a servant to others. We cannot truly express who we are. If we are oppressed, we must follow orders and do what others dictate. Thus, the yearning for freedom arises from the wish to escape such existence. It signifies a deep need for liberation.
There are still several nations that haven’t achieved independence. During the events of World War I and World War II, numerous countries failed to secure their freedom. Smaller nations were dominated by larger ones. Intense conflicts erupted between countries to achieve independence. Countless individuals and soldiers sacrificed their lives during these struggles. Yet, their resolve to attain freedom remained strong.
The intrusion of the British East India Company in India
During that period, people from certain countries ventured into others, gradually initiating businesses and plundering their resources. A prime example is the British East India Company, which established British dominance in India for over two centuries. In addition to their business intentions, the company also curtailed the rights of the local populace. It is intriguing, perhaps ironically, that an Indian came to own a company such as this! The company’s ship, Hector, was tasked with exporting spices, tea, and various goods from India to Europe, completing a distance of 16,000 kilometers to arrive at the Indian shores. In 1690, the company set up its factory in Kolkata. In this way, the British laid the groundwork for governing the region.
In 2005, a businessman of Indian descent, Sanjeev Mehta, revived and acquired the company. That year, he bought it and redirected it into the high-end food, tea, and coffee market, wherever the company had once ruled.
In general, Indians regard the East India Company as a representation of oppression and exploitation. Mehta states that he found mental peace amid the memories of those injustices connected with owning the company. Hence, the first branch of this establishment was opened in London’s Mayfair district.
The East India Company originated in 1600 through a royal charter granted by the British queen of that time. The Queen also contributed financially to the company’s trade ventures in Asia. During the company’s prime, it employed a significant portion of the British workforce. Furthermore, it held a substantial influence over international trade. On September 8, 2020, Mehta received the right to utilize the East India Company’s logo and seal alongside the sale of luxury food items and gift baskets. The authorization to mint gold mohairs and other coins was also granted. The last time gold mohairs were minted was in 1918, during British rule over India.
Over the years, the British East India Company ceased to exist. This happened because the soldiers rebelled against their leaders in 1874. The company was officially ended and remained inactive for a lengthy period. After around 135 years, the shareholders decided to re-enter the tea and coffee trading business.
The British often entered India through various means and took away the profits. Some individuals in India opposed the British in an effort to protect our nation from their control. They demanded that the British leave our land. Many fought against them. Different efforts led to the British being expelled from India. Eventually, on 15 August 1947, India became a free nation. Since that time, Independence Day has been observed in India.
Celebrations
In this manner, not only India but also other nations achieved independence by combating their rulers. Independence Day is a celebration not limited to one country; every free nation observes this day. However, the date of this celebration varies; each country commemorates independence on the specific day it was freed.
